What To Do When You’re a Teacher Being Cyberbullied #edsec #edtech #edchat

A few days ago, a good friend approached me about a difficult situation taking place in her classroom. After noticing that a student had given her a disparaging nickname in an email, she was devastated when she came across numerous mean-spirited, false comments made about her by that student on a social network.

This wasn’t the first time it had happened in her school– but it was the first time it had happened to her, and she wasn’t sure how to bounce back from something that has marred the last few weeks she had with her students this year. What should she do to protect herself from this in the future? Continue reading “What To Do When You’re a Teacher Being Cyberbullied #edsec #edtech #edchat”

#52weeks: Meet our writers, new and old.

It’s been a big week for that little project I kicked off with some Twitter friends.

No, we’re not internet famous– yet?– but our ranks have doubled since we declared our intentions to write /ALL/ the things once a week for the next year. I’m jumping up and down in my seat with excitement essite as I type this, because I’m very much thrilled to introduce you to the three newest members of our #52weeks community, Emily, McKenzie, and Kristian.

Yesterday, Emily contributed with her first post, and I connected with it almost instantly. Her words embrace the concept of the growth mindset, the idea that our abilities are not tied to natural talent but on hard work.

” This coming year is about breaking that mold and taking some risks. I’m ready to focus on the things I want to accomplish that I’m not sure about. The things that don’t come naturally, that might frustrate me, things that I may initially believe I’m not good at. Because real rewards come with real risks.”

This morning, I was completely bowled over when Kristian (KayTeaWhy) threw her introductory post into the ring. I’ve never met her before, but I connected immediately with her feelings about confidence and connecting with others.

I know that I have a voice, and thoughts and opinions, and a life, just like the rest of you.  I’ve just never been so confident to share all of that.  I’ve always longed for a connection with people, but it’s always been a game I’ve lost. And I really don’t like losing.

I’ll be updating this post to include Kristin’s first post when it appears.  In the mean time, here’s a link to Dan’s first and second posts, and to Phil’s first post in which he describes a new life journey. Want to join our adventure? Tweet any of us. We’d be honored to have you.

I’m a ridiculous now.

I’ve been saving this picture– you  know me, I love ridiculous– for the right moment.

It’s here.

I’ve said all over the internet that I love my job. I’m incredibly lucky to work with the people that I do and to have the opportunities and freedom that I have to do almost anything I want for my company as long as I can justify it. I couldn’t be in a better place– I am constantly learning and my coworkers constantly inspire and challenge me or nudge me and give me room to grow and figure things out. I’m incredibly lucky to be in a position where I basically get paid to be myself, and I am can get excited about “silly things” like being retweeted (as us) by my favorite blogger, by getting a mention from another favorite blogger, and by other “little” things like Twitter and Facebook brand pages being launched in the near future. My family, bless their hearts, doesn’t quite get what my job is, but they get that I’m happy, incredibly happy and I’m not going to be coming home anytime soon.

I’ve been doing some work on my company’s Google + page– kill me, I waited for Google to launch multi-admin support until going for it– and while completing our profile, this exchange first happened in my  head, then my iChat, furrowed brow and all.

Hey, I run that!

“Hey, I built that!”

[Enters third URL]
“Hey, I built that, too!”

[Enters fourth URL]
“Whoa, I made that three!”

[pause]
“Wait, what? I’ve been busy! When did I do these things?”

… and then…
“Holy CRAP. We’re EVERYWHERE! … OH MY GOD, I HAVE AN EMPIRE NOW!”

See that look up there? That’s me looking ridiculous er, imperious. Look at me, yo, I’m an ridiculous empress. On the internets, even!
